Amid reports that Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan received a death threat via an e-mail bearing terror outfit Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)’ name the Mumbai Police has confirmed the matter and security around the central bank’s chief has been stepped up.

Deputy Police Commissioner and city police spokesman Dhananjay Kulkarni told Business Standard, “Yes, it has been confirmed that the RBI governor has received a threat mail. The police is inquiring into it. The mail has come from a proxy server and may not be a real threat. It may be a sort of a mischief. The Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of the city police is currently investigating the matter.” Kulkarni said adequate security cover has been provided to Rajan.

The threat that came on Rajan’s personal email id said, “I have been given money by somebody to eliminate you. If you will pay me more than I have been paid, then we can decide on it.” The ID starts with Iraq-based terrorist outfit ISIS. As soon as the email was received, RBI officials alerted the office of the joint commissioner of crime branch.

Police sources said the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell has forwarded requests to Google in the US to provide details about the email ID.

According to sources, the email was sent from the ID isis583847@gmail.com earlier this month.
