US grants ByteDance new seven-day extension of TikTok sale order

The Trump administration on Wednesday granted ByteDance a new seven-day extension of a divestiture order that had directed the Chinese company to sell its TikTok short video-sharing app, according to a court filing. The Trump administration previously had granted ByteDance a 15-day extension of the order issued in August, which was set to expire Friday. The new deadline is Dec. 4, TikTok said. Under pressure from the U.S. government, ByteDance has been in talks for months to finalize a deal with Walmart Inc and Oracle Corp to shift TikTok's U.S. assets into a new entity.

Goa govt to install statue of soccer great late Diego Maradona

The Goa government will install the life-size statue of late Argentine football legend Diego Maradona in the coastal belt of North district by early next year, a senior minister said on Wednesday. Maradona's statue is already under making with a Maharashtra-based artist working on the mould, Calangute MLA and state Ports Minister Michael Lobo told PTI.

Lobo had announced installation of the statue of Maradona in 2018. "The statue would be installed somewhere at Candolim or Calangute to inspire the football playing youth," he said. Lobo said the mould of the statue is ready. "It is an actual-size statue as tall as late Maradona," the minister said, adding that the 350-kg statue is part of the state government's initiative to encourage football culture.

UP power minister asks UPPCL to ensure 'correct, timely' billing to people

Blaming wrong and delayed billing to consumers for a whopping Rs 90,000 crore loss to the electricity department, Power Minister Shrikant Sharma has asked the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited to take corrective measures and asserted the state government was committed to providing electricity to people at an affordable rate.

 

Sharma told PTI on Wednesday that he has asked the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) to ensure "correct and timely" billing to consumers as he expressed his unhappiness over the fact that over 30 per cent of urban and 75 per cent of rural consumers were not paying their bills. The main reason for people not paying their bills is that they are getting inflated and delayed bills, he said.

 

Sharma has also urged Chief Minister Yogi Aadityanath to take punitive action against those responsible for not executing an agreement the UPPCL has with six billing agencies.

Malayalam film 'Jallikattu' is India's entry for Oscars 2021

Malayalam film 'Jallikattu,' has been selected as India's official entry into the 93rd annual Oscar Awards. Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Instagram to break the big news.

 

"INDIA'S OFFICIAL ENTRY TO #OSCARS... #Malayalam film #Jallikattu will be #India's official entry to the 93rd Academy Awards 2021 #Oscars," he wrote.

 

Directed by filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery, written by S Hareesh and R Jayakumar, the film stars actors Sabumon Abdusamad, Santhy Balachandran, Antony Varghese and Chemban Vinod Jose.

 

The film that was released in 2019, has been adapted from the short story 'Maoist,' by S Hareesh and will be taking part in Oscar's race for the 'Best International Feature Film,' category. Earlier last year, Zoya Akhtar directorial 'Gully Boy,' had been selected as India's official entry into the prestigious award ceremony.

CBI recovers Rs 1 crore cash, jewellery in raids across four states in corruption cases

The CBI on Wednesday recovered Rs 1 crore in cash, besides jewellery and papers related to investments during its searches in four states in two separate cases of corruption, officials said.

 

The searches pertained to separate corruption cases registered against a Railway engineer and an India Tourism official, they said.

 

The operation was spread across multiple locations, including the premises of the accused officials and their respective conduits, in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, they said.

Govt to infuse Rs 2,000 cr in NIIF debt fund in FY21 for infra development

The government will infuse Rs 2,000 crore as equity in a debt platform of the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) in the current financial year. This is part of the Rs 6,000 crore announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman under a stimulus package earlier this month.

 

However, given a resource crunch facing the government, the amount approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday – which is a third of the total funds committed – could be infused this year only if there is an absorptive capacity to utilise that. The remaining funds will be released in 2021-22.

 

The total equity infusion of Rs 6,000 crore, along with other funds, will help the platform raise Rs 6-7 million of debt by 2025 to fund infra projects to the tune of Rs 1.1 trillion so that costlier bank finances could be replaced. This would also help the platform raise equity to the tune of Rs 7,000 crore from domestic and global pension, insurance and sovereign wealth funds. READ ON...

MHA guidelines: Local restrictions like night curfew allowed; Prior consultation with Centre needed for any lockdown outside containment zones

States and union territories can impose local restrictions like night curfew to check the spread of COVID-19, but they will have to consult the Centre before imposing any lockdown outside the containment zones, the Ministry of Home Affairs said on Wednesday. While issuing guidelines for "Surveillance, Containment and Caution" for December, the MHA said the main focus of the directive is to consolidate the substantial gains that have been achieved against the spread of COVID-19 that are visible in the steady decline in the number of active cases in the country.

 

The guidelines said that keeping in view the recent spike in new cases in a few states and UTs, ongoing festival season and onset of winter, it is emphasised that to fully overcome the pandemic there is a need to maintain caution and to strictly follow the prescribed containment strategy. The containment strategy should be focussed on surveillance, containment and strict observance of the guidelines and SOPs issued by the MHA and Ministry of Health, they said.

 

"States and UTs, based on their assessment of the situation, may impose local restrictions, with a view to contain the spread of COVID-19 such as night curfew. "However, state and UT governments shall not impose any local lockdown (state/ district/ sub-division/City level), outside the containment zones, without prior consultation with the central government," the guidelines said.

 

The guidelines will be effective from December 1 to December 31.
