The second in-person Quad Leaders' Summit in Japan will provide an opportunity for leaders of four countries to review the progress of the grouping's initiatives and exchange views on developments in the Indo-Pacific as well as on global issues of mutual interest, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday.
In his departure statement ahead of his visit to Japan from May 23-24, Modi said during his visit he will also hold a bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden, where they will discuss further consolidation of the multi-faceted bilateral relations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condoled the loss of lives in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh's Siddharthnagar and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of the deceased.
An SUV carrying a marriage party rammed into a stationary truck in Siddharthnagar, leaving seven people dead. The incident occurred on Saturday night near Katya village in the Jogia Udaypur area.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday informed that there are more than 16.53 million (16,53,73,860) balance and unutilized Covid-19 vaccine doses still available with the States/Union Territories that are yet to be administered.
According to an official statement from the ministry, the Government of India has so far provided more than 193.53 crore (1,93,53,58,865) vaccine doses to the States/UTs from its free of cost channel and through the direct state procurement category.
The Union government, as a part of its nationwide vaccination drive that started on tarted on 16 January 2021, has been supporting the States and UTs by providing them Covid-19 Vaccines free of cost.

Reeling under the mismanagement of Xi Jinping's Zero-Covid Policy, parts of Beijing have again come under a lockdown on Sunday, as the pandemic outbreak continues to spread in more and more cities in China.
The authorities have imposed a lockdown in the Haidian district along with Chaoyang, Fengtai, Shunyi, and Fangshan districts, China's Global Times reported citing a statement of the city government's spokesperson, Xu in Hejian.
As per the Chinese media reports, except for restaurants offering delivery services and pharmacies, all indoor entertainment venues, gyms, training institutes, and shopping malls have been closed from today.

India logged 2,226 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of Covid-19 cases to 4,31,36,371, while the active cases dipped to 14,955, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday.
The death toll climbed to 5,24,413 with 65 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.
The active cases comprise 0.03 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.75 per cent, the ministry said.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 jolted Batangas province on the main Philippine island of Luzon on Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
The institute said the quake, which occurred at 5:50 a.m., hit at a depth of 132 km, about 21-km northwest of Calatagan town.
The tremor was also felt in Metro Manila and the provinces of Bulacan and Oriental Mindoro, Xinhua news agency reported.

A tourist plane crashed near the town of Les Adrets in southeast France, officials said.
Five dead bodies, including a child, were discovered at the site of the crash on Saturday afternoon, French news channel BFMTV reported.

According to the reports of Assam State Disaster Management Authority, nearly 3.40 lakh people have been affected alone in Nagaon district followed by 1.78 lakh in Cachar district, 70,233 in Hojai, 44,382 in Darrang district, 17,776 in Morigaon district and 16,382 in Karimganj district.
Four persons died on Friday after drowning in flood waters in Cachar, Hojai and Nagaon districts and the death toll in floods and landslides rose to 18.
As per the report, 93562.40 hectares of cropland and 2,248 villages are still underwater.
