Maharashtra sees over 30,000 new Covid cases, biggest single-day spike

In what is its biggest single-day spike since the coronavirus pandemic began last year, Maharashtra on Sunday reported 30,535 fresh coronavirus cases, taking its infection tally to 24,79,682, according to the state health department.

With 99 new deaths, the total toll in the state swelled to 53,399. As on Sunday, there are 210,120 active cases in the state.

The case fatality rate is at 2.15 per cent. Currently 969,867 people are in home quarantine and 9,601 are undergoing institutional quarantine in the state, according to the state department data.

The positivity rate in the state stands at 13.5 per cent. Over 11,000 people have recovered or discharged during the same period. The recovery rate currently stands at 89.32 per cent.

On Sunday, 138,199 people were tested, and about 22.09 per cent of them were found positive. 

Meanwhile, Mumbai added 3,775 new infections to its tally, and the total infection count increased to 362,654.

The number of Covid-19 cases in Nagpur rose by 3,614 to touch 193,080 on Sunday, while the day also saw 32 deaths and 1,859 people recovering.

The COVID-19 tally of Pune district rose by 5,408 in the last 24 hours to reach 4,69,478, while the day also saw 32 deaths and 1,245 people getting discharged, an official said on Sunday.

The toll in the district is 9,569, he added.

Of the new cases, Pune city accounted for 2,900 and Pimpri Chinchwad 1,416, and the rest were in the rural and cantonment areas, he said.

"Pune city now has a caseload of 2,35,394, Pimpri Chinchwad 1,22,365 and the rural and cantonment areas have 1,11,719," the official informed.

The COVID-19 tally in Nashik district rose to 1,48,138 with the addition of 2,360 cases on Sunday, while the day also saw 10 deaths and 676 people recovering, an official said.

Sunday was the fifth consecutive day when the addition to the caseload was above the 2,000-mark, he pointed out.

The toll in the district is 2,220 and the number of people discharged is 1,29,002, he added.

With 7,982 samples being examined on Sunday, the number of tests in Nashik went up to 6,27,268.
