Man lynched for allegedly eating beef in village near Delhi

A 50-year-old man, Mohammad Akhlaq, was beaten to death by a mob Monday night in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, 56 kms away from the national capital, over alleged rumours that his family had eaten beef, The Indian Express reported.

The assailants also brutally beat up his 22 year old son, who is now fighting for life in a nearby hospital. 

However, Akhlaq's daughter Sajida (18) said they only had mutton (goat meat) in their fridge. 

Police said they have sent samples of the meat taken from Akhlaq’s home “to the forensic department for examination”. 
 

Akhlaq and his son were dragged out of their home by unruly villagers and reportedly beaten with bricks. While Akhlaq succumbed to his injuries, his son Danish, is battling for life at a government hospital in Noida, the report added.

The incident comes amid the ongoing debate over implementation of beef ban.

Akhlaq's family has been staying in the village for last 35 years.

Six people have been arrested so far in connection with the attack.

“Every time there was a feast in this house, Hindu residents of the village would attend such functions. Even on Bakr-Id, we had guests. But suddenly they started doubting us. There was some mutton in the fridge which was taken away yesterday. They thought it was beef. The police have taken it for examination. If the results prove that it was not beef, will they bring back my dead father?” Sajda told The Indian Express.

Giving details about the rumour the report added that apparently a calf went missing from Bisara village around September 16 and on September 28, rumours about remains of the calf being found near a field close to Akhlaq’s house in Bisara stated doing the rounds.
