Tobacco use: Over 1,000 cases booked in a week in Mysuru

The Mysuru police have stepped up their drive against the use of tobacco and its products, including cigarettes.

During the last week ending November 2, they booked as many as 1,127 cases and realised fine amount of Rs 1,30,100 through a special drive under the Cigarettes and Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production  Supply and Distribution)  COTPA.

Police Commissioner M A Saleem on Tuesday said  3,985 cases were booked from January to October and the fine realised was Rs 5,57,550. This included 700 cases booked in October and a fine of Rs 80,700.

He said people should realise that smoking was harmful to health and hence stop smoking. Smoking at public places like schools, hospitals, courts, sports stadium, railway station, bus terminals, and in bars and restaurants, and cinema houses were prohibited under the law. Any violation would result in booking cases under COPTA, the police commissioner warned.
