Prithvi II's twin trial successfully test fired: 10 key points about India's indigenous missile

Prithvi-II, an indigenously developed nuclear-capable missile was successfully test fired twice in quick succession from Chandipur in Odisha on Monday. With constant efforts of the DRDO scientists, the range and precision of this missile has been to enhance the country's nuclear arsenal.

Nuclear tests are carried out by choosing missiles from India's military arsenal to pilot the country's emergency preparations if a war-like situation ever arises. Through this, a nation can also check its progress.

The success of India's indigenous missile tests now strengthens India’s position in the exclusive Ballistic Missile Defence club of the US, Russia and Israel.

Last time when India test fired Prithvi-II missile, Pakistan's Foreign Affairs Minister Sartaj Aziz threatened to raise the matter at the International arena. 

Here are 10 key points about Prithvi-II missiles 

1. Prithvi-II is the first missile to be developed by the DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme

2. Prithvi II is a series of short range ballistic missiles launched to combat opponents in war-like situations. 

3. The first test fire of this missile was carried out in 1996 and its development stage was completed in the year 2004.

4. It was inducted into Indian armed forces in 2003 by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC)

5. Prithvi-II missile has a strike range of 350 km

6. It is capable of carrying 500-1000 kg of warheads

7. Prithvi-II is thrusted by liquid propulsion twin engines. It is 9 metres tall.

8. It uses advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory to hit its target. Its route was tracked by the DRDO radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations

9. Launch activities are carried out by the specially formed strategic force command (SFC) and monitored by the scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) 

10. In a similar trial, India test fired  Prithvi II as a part of a users trial in May.
