Government on Wednesday gave its nod for signing of an agreement between India and the African Asian Rural Development Organisation (AARDO) for capacity building programmes in the field of rural development.

The Memorandum for Understanding (MoU) for the triennium 2015-2017 will be signed under which capacity building programmes for AARDO member countries will be organised every year at various institutions in India.

The approval for signing of the MoU was given by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an official statement.

The training programmes will be organised at the institutes such as National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj (NIRD&PR), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) among others.

Duration of each training programme will be of two to three weeks. The Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Development Management Course at NIRD & PR under this scheme is for one year.

India is one of the founder members of AARDO, which is an autonomous, inter-governmental organisation established in 1962 with the objective of promoting cooperation among the countries of the African-Asian region for eradicating thirst, hunger, illiteracy, disease and poverty.

AARDO currently has 31 countries of the African and Asian region as its members.
