The Left parties in the country have decided to move a cut motion against the Finance Bill of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at the Centre, protesting the Centre's move to hike prices of petrol and diesel and its inability to curb spiraling prices of essential food items.

Addressing reporters here, D Raja, national secretary, Communist Party of India (CPI) said, “We have decided to move a cut motion against the UPA Government's upcoming Finance Bill. By raising prices of petrol and diesel and failing to rein in prices of essential food items, the Centre has failed to address the concerns of the aam admi.” Alleging that the Centre has failed to streamline the public distribution system (PDS) in the country, he demanded the universalisation of PDS.

The Left parties have planned to start a nationwide agitation soon against rising prices which will witness the participation of around 35 lakh party workers, he said. Our key demands include food for all, jobs for all and universalisation of PDS, Raja added.

Questioning the effectiveness of the Operation Green Hunt in combating the Maoists, he said, “The country's Home minister is indulging in mere rhetoric without realizing the ground realities of the Maoist insurgency. Operation Green Hunt alone cannot solve the Maoist problem as it is not just a law and order problem, rather some socio-economic issues are associated with it”.
