Tax revenue up 21.89 per cent in state

Orissa has clocked a growth of 21.89 per cent in own tax revenue and 68.91 per cent growth in non-tax revenue in the April-June period of the current financial year over the corresponding period of last fiscal.

On the whole, the state's tax and non-tax revenue registered an increase of 31.45 per cent in the said period. The state's share tax stood at Rs 2143.77 crore, representing a growth of 13.05 per cent over Rs 1896.27 crore achieved in the April-June period of 2009-10.

The grants from the Centre showed a sharp decline of 41.16 per cent from Rs 850.63 crore to Rs 500.52 crore in the said period. The state's total revenue receipts grew 11.42 per cent in this period from Rs 4825.20 crore to Rs 5376.28 crore.

The state's tax revenue went up from Rs 1655.68 crore by the end of June 2009 to Rs 2018.12 crore by the end of June this year. The biggest contributor to the state government's tax revenue was sales tax collection which stood at Rs 1182.93 crore in the April-June period of this fiscal, marking a growth of Rs 939.60 crore in the year-ago period.

Similarly, the state excise collection moved up from Rs 156.09 crore to Rs 206.10 crore, a growth of 32.04 per cent. However, the taxes and duties on electricity witnessed a sharp fall of 42.71 per cent from Rs 163.58 crore to Rs 93.71 crore.

The non-tax revenue in the state rose from Rs 422.63 crore by the end of June 2009 to Rs 713.87 crore by the end of June this year. As far as non-tax revenue is concerned, non-ferrous mining and metallurgical industries were the biggest revenue generator at Rs 611.31 crore in the April-June period of this fiscal, a surge of 90.63 per cent over Rs 320.67 crore achieved in the same period of 2009-10.
