West Bengal government today accused the Centre for stalling development of Haldia as an industrial zone by not giving environmental clearances.
The industrial town of Haldia was earlier declared as 'critically polluted zone', which the government said has been hindrance to setting up new projects.
“There are still enough opportunity for new projects. But, in the name of environmental issues Centre is stalling the opportunity,” West Bengal industry minister Partha Chatterjee said.
According to Chatterjee, the matter has been discussed by chief minister Mamata Banerjee at a recent meeting with representatives of business community. “We have written to the Centre raising the issue. There has been no response. We will once again raise the matter with Centre,” he added.
Incidentally, West Bengal government's second edition of annual industrial summit, 'Bengal Leads', is going to take place in Haldia to focus on the investment opportunities in the region.
