Congress leader Meem Afzal on Saturday said that it was a good thing that Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had said that he would not use divisive policies to garner votes but added that he was definitely going to spread communalism in the name of religion.

"It is a very good thing that Narendra Modi has said that he is not going to ask for votes in the name of religion, but the question is that will he actually implement it?" asked Afzal.

"He might not directly ask for votes in the name of religion, but he is definitely going to spread communalism in the name of religion," he said.

In an interview to CNBC-Awaaz yesterday, Modi said there was no question of him reaching out to the Muslim community to seek their votes as he believed in talking to Indians as a whole and not on the basis of their religion.

He also said that he would never engage in divisive politics even at the cost of losing the elections.
