The National Commission for Women (NCW) today sent a notice to Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav's over his remarks on rape during an election rally in Moradabad.

The Commssion also sent a letter to the Election Commission of India to take cognizance of the matter and take action to curb such incidents in future.

Terming Yadav's remarks "highly irresponsible", Chairman of NCW, Mamta Sharma said "we have issued a notice to Mulayam Singh Yadav over his remarks on rape during an election rally. It was a highly irresponsible statement coming from a public fighure like him and he should publicly apologise to all the women of the country," said Sharma.

The Commission took cognizance of media reports and along with the notice, sent a letter to the ECI to take steps so that such incidents are not repeated in future.

Questioning the death sentence to three men who were convicted for two gangrapes in Mumbai last week, the SP supremo had yesterday asked, "should rape cases be punished with hanging?

"Ladke, ladke hain. Galti ho jati hai (Boys are boys. mistakes happen sometimes)," he had said during an election rally in Moradabad.
