Co-branded travel cards are less flexible but more rewarding: Here's why

Opt for these cards if you are loyal to an airline. Else, go for general travel cards

When opting for a travel card, the choice is between co-branded cards and general cards.

Rewards in co-branded cards can be redeemed only with a specific airline. But there are many exclusive perks

If you travel regularly with a single airline, a co-branded card is a smart way to get more costs covered. If not, a general travel card will provide much more flexibility.

A good travel credit card should give at least 2 per cent of spends as rewards. Issuers charging higher annual fees should give even better rewards points.

Don’t opt for a card based on sign-up bonuses alone. The ongoing rewards are more important as they ensure that benefits last for a longer time period.

Check if its features suit your needs. If you frequent lounges, go for one that offers a higher number of lounge visits. If you travel with expensive items, ensure your card gives baggage protection.
