Dear Students,

LAST WEEK WE ASKED:

Do you think plagiarism has increasingly stunted research among Indian institutes?

BEST RESPONSE

The work carried out on the pretext of research in Indian educational institutes is increasingly becoming a derivative of others idea and work. Thus, in spite of greater research, the novelty and innovation is missing. This is further aided with the increase in number of resources available on internet which further promotes plagiarism. Institutes must immediately resort to stringent rules with serious repercussions in the event of plagiarism, to revive and fortify the culture of research.

- Akshay Chadha, NSIT, Delhi.

OTHER RESPONSES

Plagiarism has certainly stunted research among Indian institutes but other factors have also scaled down the quality. These include lack of proper training of scientist, lack of oversight, research facility, quality assistance from government and non government organisation, lack of research culture, and lack of funds. The government can certainly allocate more funds towards research, promote research culture, allow foreign institute to set their base in India. Educational institutes should have well equipped laboratory to promote research and students should have proper motivation to enter into research field then only Indian student will produce quality research scholar.

- Nilaya Mitash Shanker, Shri Ram Swaroop Memorial College Of Engineering And Management (SRMCEM), Lucknow

Research is an integral part for any institute's development. Though it might be true that plagiarism has affected the lower rung colleges but the A grade colleges are least affected by it. It is proved from the fact that internationally acclaimed institutes are tying up with renowned colleges in India as well as planning to set campus on Indian shores in the offing. Government can further enhance the quality of research in Indian colleges by providing financial support and encouraging them by giving accolades.

- Shivam Chhabra, Integral University, Lucknow.

Plagiarism is considered academic dishonesty or academic fraud, and due to extensive internet marketing and promotion fraud institutes are playing with student's future. Hence plagiarism has increasingly stunted research among Indian institutes.

- Jimit Parikh, St. Kabir Institute of Professional Studies, Ahmedabad.

Academics is just a part of learning process and there is much more to realise beyond that to become a comprehensive personality. A shift in approach and attitude among researchers will engage them in a constructive thinking process that in turn will promote originality in R&D.

- Arvind Umashankar, VNIT, Nagpur

Research papers and case studies are common teaching methodologies at various B-schools of India. The big issue is whether these materials used are authentic or plagiarised. Most B-schools use research papers available at Internet or of some other reputed B-school around the world. This, in turn, hampers the creativity of young minds. The research papers should be taken into consideration but should not be ultimate source for knowledge.

- Harsh Mehta, St. Kabir Institute Of Professional Studies, Ahmedabad

Every researcher aims at presenting a seminal paper for which a motivated guide willing to explore beyond existing border is a blessing. Plagiarism is no fun and easy work, a researcher is forced to adopt this under extreme pressure from vested interest groups. Private bodies with unbiased attitude may please consider to donate funds impartially with strong checks and balance to initiate atmosphere of original research where unnecessary fear and pressure is not a dominant factor.

- Soma Dutta, Jadavpur University
