Sensex ends down 176pts

The Sensex has finally ended (provisional) at 17,464, down 176 points.

The NSE Nifty ended (provisional) at 5,224, down 51 points.

The Sensex has extended its lossed andis now at 17,509, down 132 points. The NSE Nifty is at 5,230, down 44 points. ________________________________________________________

Losses widen after the European markets open on a negative note

The FTSE has slipped 25 points. The CAC is down 25 points, and the DAX has declined 38 points in early trade on the European bourses.

Following which, the Sensex has extended losses and is now down 63 points at 17,577. The NSE Nifty is down 23 points at 5,252.

The Sensex continues to languish in the narrow band of 100-odd points. The Sensex is now down 13 points at 17,628.

The NSE Nifty is down seven points at 5,268.

The BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices have out-performed with gains of 0.5% and 0.8%, respectively. The PSU index has surged over 1%.

The market breadth too is positive - out of 2,893 stocks traded so far, 1,561 have advanced, 1,248 have declined on the BSE.

BHEL has moved up nearly 2% to Rs 2,420, and Reliance Infrastructure has gained over 1% at Rs 1,142.

ICICI Bank, Sterlite and SBI are the other prominent gainers.

On the other hand, ACC has plunged 2.5% to Rs 959. Mahindra & Mahindra and Hero Honda have slipped 2% each to Rs 1,155 and Rs 1,664, respectively.

Grasim and TCS have declined nearly 1.5% each to Rs 2,749 and Rs 789, respectively.

HDFC, Wipro, Reliance Communications and ONGC are also down over 1% each.
