More than half of Japan's population has opposed the government's move to promote Japan's export of nuclear technologies and expertise, according to a new opinion poll.
Nearly 60 percent of the survey respondents were against Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's nuclear export policy while only 24 percent declared their approval for the policy, the Japan Times reports.
According to the report, the poll results come after Abe's agreement with French President Francois Hollande in cooperating to expand sales of nuclear power plant equipment and technologies to other countries.
However, the survey revealed that the respondents were strongly concerned about the safety of atomic energy following the Fukushima power station's nuclear disaster in March 2011.
According to the report, 43.2 percent supporters of Abe are ruling Liberal Democratic Party had opposed the policy as compared to 40.4 percent who had supported it.
While 76.1 percent of the supporters of Democratic Party of Japan said that they are against the move by Abe's government, 50.0 percent of people backing the Japan Restoration Party disapproved of the policy as opposed to 45.5 percent who favoured the same, the report added.
