A day after striking an alliance with the Communist Party of India (CPI), Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief Jayalalithaa on Monday formed another alliance with the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Addressing a joint press conference with CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, Jayalalithaa said, "I want to announce that the AIADMK and the CPI (M) has decided to enter into an alliance to face the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections together and we expect that this alliance will be successful."

Responding to queries regarding the prime ministerial candidate of her party's alliance with CPI and CPI (M), Jayalalithaa said, "This is not the time to debate on who the next prime minister will be. It is pointless for any political party to enter into such discussions now. The question of discussing and deciding who the next PM would be will arise only after the elections results are out."

Expressing confidence in the alliance between CPI (M) and AIADMK, Karat said, "We are confident that this alliance will ensure success in Tamil Nadu and contribute in providing an alternative to the country also. We are very glad that we have arrived at this understanding today."

On Sunday, the AIADMK had formed an alliance with the CPI, after CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan had met Jayalalithaa and discussed about a possible alliance between the two parties.

Bardhan had said that if the alliance between the CPI and AIADMK succeeds then there will be prospects of Jayalalithaa becoming the PM.
