A special court in Ahmedabad has rejected a plea made by survivors of the 2002 Gulberg Society massacre to declare four former police officers accused for alleged negligence in duty.

Special judge P B Desai on Monday rejected the petition seeking arraignment of then Ahmedabad Police Commissioner P C Pandey, Joint Commissioner of Police M K Tandon, Assistant Commissioner of

Police P B Gondia and Assistant Police Commissioner S S Chudasama.

The petitioners' lawyer alleged that the police officers in question did not react in time to prevent the violence at the Gulberg Society, which resulted in 69 deaths, including the death of former Congress

Member of Parliament Ehsan Jafri.

A report submitted by the Special Investigating team (SIT) had rejected the plea on grounds that no material evidence was found against the four police officers.

The incident took place on 28 February 2002 during the 2002 Gujarat riots when a mob attacked the Gulberg society and set most of the houses on fire killing 69 people.
