Amid soaring LoC tensions, UN calls on India, Pak to find "common ground"

Following the recent spree of ceasefire violations and cross-border firings between India and Pakistan along the Line of Control, the United Nations has expressed concern and has called for restoration of stability in the region to prevent any further escalation.

A statement attributed to UN chief Ban Ki-moon's spokesman said that the former is deeply concerned about the deterioration of the situation along the Line of Control in Kashmir in recent days.

"He calls on all involved to prioritize the restoration of calm and stability in order to prevent any further escalation and loss of life. The Secretary-General trusts that the Republic of India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan can find common ground and work towards a sustainable peace," the statement read.

The statement concluded saying that the United Nations stands by the people of the region and supports all efforts to reach durable peace and security.

Tensions between the hostile neighbours have been on an all-time high since the attack on an Indian Army base in Uri on September 18 and surgical strike that followed on terrorist launchpads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir by the army.

Since India's surgical strikes on September 29, Pakistan has violated the ceasefire more than 60 times firing at Indian military posts and villages.

Meanwhile, two massive encounters between terrorists are security forces are underway in Bandopora and Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir.
