Australian harassed: Will look into matter seriously, says DCP

Bengaluru police on Monday said that they will be taking into serious consideration the case of an Australian national allegedly harassed by a group of people over sporting a tattoo of a Hindu goddess, and will take necessary actions based on the progress of the inquiry.

"It was brought to our notice that a foreign national was abused and harassed. A foreign national was having lunch in a hotel. Other people sitting in the hotel objected to a tattoo of a goddess on his shin. There was some kind of argument. As alleged by the foreign national, if there was any abuse or harassment by the accused or even by the local police, Bengaluru city police will take the matter very seriously," Deputy Commissioner of Police(Central) Sandeep Patil told the media here.

"A senior rank officer has been appointed to conduct an inquiry. Based on the inquiry we will take necessary action," he added.

A group of people harassed an Australian couple at a restaurant here on Saturday, for sporting the tattoo of Hindu goddess on his shin.

According to reports, the local police not only detained them but also forced the man to apologise to the group for 'hurting their religious sentiments.'

Meanwhile, the accused, Ramesh defending himself said that he had asked the foreign national to apologise as the tattoo on the young man's leg, hurts their religious sentiments.

"We tried to ask him to cover the tattoo and wear full sleeves pant. Since navratra is going on I asked him to cover the tattoo as some people may harm him. We called the police after the argument. He abused us in English. We asked them to apologize," accused Ramesh told the media.
