President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama have thanked Spike Lee's 'Do the Right Thing' which they watched on their first date 25 years ago.

During a screening held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the 57-year-old American film director cued up a clip of the 44th and current President of the United States and his wife where they opened up about their first date during which they went to see the groundbreaking and iconic film, People Magazine reported.

The couple revealed that they had gone for lunch at the Art Institute of Chicago, followed by a little walk before watching the "new movie everybody was talking about, directed by a guy that not that many people had heard of".

Speaking about the film, Barack said that the film "still holds up a mirror to our society, and it makes us laugh, and think and challenges all us to see ourselves in one another".

The 50-year-old first African-American First Lady of the United States added that Barack was trying to show me his sophisticated side by selecting an independent filmmaker.

Together, they thanked Lee for the movie, and for helping him impress Michelle, along with telling a powerful story.
