Befitting tribute to Nirbhaya still pending: BJP

As the nation observes the 2nd anniversary of December 16 gang rape case, Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday said that befitting tribute to Nirbhaya is still waiting. It would be complete when we use technology available to us.

"We still have a 1000cr Nirbhaya fund to be utilized; befitting tribute to her would be if we use technology available to us," Bharatiya Janata Party's spokesperson and treasurer Shaina NC told ANI.

"There are lacunas in the system, but if we need fast-tracks then strong prosecution system is required," she added.

Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Shazia Ilmi expressed her disappointment and said that the nation has not been able to pay the actual tribute to Nirbhaya.

"After many protest and demands for improvement in women safety, no reforms have been observed. Many cases are observed but lodging FIR by women seems to be difficult," said Ilmi.

The family of the victim, earlier in Monday, urged the judiciary to expedite the court proceedings to grant justice in the December 16 gang rape case, and stated that they were still waiting for the courts to grant them justice.

"Whenever I look at her photo, I am not able to look into her eyes because we haven't been able get her justice. I request the court to speed-up the process and grant justice. After the incident I feel that the society has awakened, every day we see something or the other being done about women safety. It is our system which needs to wake up," the victim's father told ANI.

The victim's mother, on the other hand, alleged that despite receiving numerous promises, justice had yet to be served.

On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student was brutally gang raped and by six men, including a juvenile, in a bus. The woman later succumbed to grave intestinal injuries at a Singapore hospital, where she had been airlifted for specialised treatment.

The four adults accused in the case were awarded them death penalty on September 13, 2013, with the Delhi High Court upholding the death penalty in March 2014.

The case is currently with the Supreme Court after the convicts appealed against the judgement.
