The Congress Party on Monday staged a protest here against the 14 percent rise in service tax effective today.

Armed with banners, the protesters shouted slogans demanding the withdrawal of the steep hike.

"If the government does not withdraw the service tax hike then the Congress will again lead such movements," warned a protestor.

The increase in service tax was announced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Budget session. The tax is imposed on all services, barring a small list.

Some key services that will become costlier are railways, airlines, banking, insurance, advertising, architecture, construction, credit cards, event management and tourism.
