Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Friday said his party was in talks with both the National Conference (NC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir but added there had been no fruitful outcome yet.

"We want to participate in Jammu and Kashmir government formation keeping in view the public mandate. We are in talks with both the parties but there has been no fruitful outcome yet," Shah said at a press conference here.

Earlier today, BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao had reiterated that no stable government would be possible in Jammu and Kashmir without his party's participation.

Leaders of both the BJP and the PDP have held talks with Governor N.N. Vohra but no party or combination of parties has staked claim to form the government so far.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls threw a fractured mandate with the PDP winning 28 seats. The BJP won 25 seats in the 87-member assembly. The National Conference finished third winning 15 seats while the Congress bagged 12 seats.

The majority mark was 44, which none of the four political parties managed to achieve.
