Bookmakers stopped taking bets on David Beckham being knighted on Saturday night after lot of money was slapped on by punters.

According to the Daily Star, a Whitehall campaign is under way led by UK Prime Minister David Cameron to get the footballer the coveted award after the football star announced his retirement last week.

William Hill suspended betting on Saturday after punters piled in on a knighthood, with odds dropping from 5/4 to 1/2.

Spokesman Rupert Adams told the publication that they fully expect Beckham to be Sir David before the end of the year.

The honour could even be announced as soon as June 15 in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

A Whitehall insider said that they are getting the list together and Beckham's name has been put forward.

"Beckham's had a great career, plus the Government and Cameron are especially grateful for him helping in the Olympics and know it will look good for them too," the source said.
