Former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott has dismissed any prospect of Australia winning the first Ashes Test after the hosts posted an imposing 412-run target at stumps on day three in Cardiff.

Boycott said that there is no way Australia are going to get it, while describing their batting as 'not special', the BBC reported.

Having a first innings lead of 122, England began to accelerate their innings on Friday as both Ian Bell and Joe Root scored 60 and Ben Stokes added 42 to the delight of buoyant crowd.

Although wickets fell at regular junctures, Mark Wood smacked 32 off 18 deliveries to help the hosts set a daunting target for the Michael Clarke-led side.

Australia, who are seeking to end a streak of three straight away Ashes series reverses on this tour, have two days to chase down the target.
