Conservative MP Nigel Evans has reportedly resigned as Commons Deputy Speaker, after he was charged with offences including sexual assault, indecent assault and rape against seven victims.
The 55-year-old MP is accused of eight offences in total dating between 2002 and 2013 to which the parliamentarian denies vehemently and has pledged to continue to represent his constituents from the backbenches.
Evans said that he will robustly defend his innocence adding that the complaints against him were incredulous, the BBC reports.
Director of Public Prosecutions for England and Wales, Keir Starmer said that there is sufficient evidence against Evans and it is in public interest to prosecute him.
Evans is expected to appear before Preston Magistrates' Court on 18 September, the report added.
