McLaren driver Jenson Button has been hit with a three-place grid penalty for overtaking under red flags during Friday's first session in Texas at the US Grand Prix.

According to the Mirror, the session had been halted because of problems with the medical helicopter.

Earlier, the Briton admitted he was surprised by McLaren's decision to hire rookie Kevin Magnussen for 2014 instead of retaining Mexican Sergio Perez, the report said.

Magnussen is the newly crowned champion of the Formula Renault series, the report added.
