A weightlifter participating in the Commonwealth Games is set to go on trial this week after he was accused of sexual assault.
Weightlifter Toua Udia was reportedly charged under the Sexual Offences Act at Glasgow Sheriff Court and is due to face trial on Friday after pleading not guilty.
Udia was arrested following a report of an incident at a Tesco supermarket near the Athletes' Village in Glasgow last Monday, the Daily Express reported.
Udia competed for his country on Sunday during the Men's 77 kilograms event at Clyde Auditorium.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said that on Monday July 21 police received a report of an incident at Tesco's supermarket on Dalmarnock Road, Rutherglen, and added that a 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault.
The Commonwealth Games Federation said that it was aware of the allegation. Chief Executive Mike Hooper said that a male athlete has been charged with an offence, he is due to appear this week in the court.
Hooper also said that there is clearly a presumption of innocence, which they all enjoy, and so really there is nothing more he can add to that. He added that it certainly didn't impact on the athlete's ability to compete because there was no condition placed upon him.
Hooper said that the reality is it is an allegation that has been made, the police is investigating it, it is their role to follow through, and they do not interfere in their process.
