Taking a slew of "intelligent" traffic management measures, the Delhi Police on Tuesday installed 13 high definition cameras at five pressure points to alert commuters in "real time" about traffic congestions.
Divulging details, Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said, "At present, 13 cameras have been fitted at five points, including ITO, Dhaula Kuan, AIIMS, Laxmi Nagar and ISBT Kashmiri Gate."
"The cameras will send feedback from those locations to the central traffic control room so that we can alert people in real time about pressure points in the city. It will eventually be connected to the Delhi Police's traffic App (application)," he added.
The Police Commissioner said such cameras would be installed at 50 locations, which would be connected to the control room through wireless.
Further, the city police have also planned to armed traffic cops with body-worn cameras to keep an eye on the conduct of commuters as well as traffic cops.
"At present, we have procured 200 body-worn cameras," said Bassi.
Besides, the Delhi Police will install vehicle-mounted cameras on 50 vehicles that will record activities on the roads. "This is going to be very useful in checking over speeding, rash driving, traffic light jumping among others, as the camera can record all such activities," said Bassi.
"Wireless cameras are first of its kind technology in India, and are one time investment. There are no recurrent costs like changing optical fibres etc. The wireless high definition cameras will send uninterrupted feed that will also available to the citizens," said Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander, at a joint press conference.
