In light of the verdict delivered in Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius' murder trial, the department of correctional services said in a statement released on Thursday that disabled prisoners could be entitled to separate accommodation.
While responding to several requests for information, the department said that separate accommodation is arranged depending on the vulnerability caused by the disability, and added that inmates are accommodated in line with their type of disability.
However, the department also said that each case is based on its own merits, Sport24 reported.
Pistorius had both legs amputated below the knee as a child.
The department added that within six hours of admission the risk for inmate and his or her needs must be assessed.
It also said that the offenders have the right to conditions of detention that are consistent with human dignity, including at least exercise and the provision, at state expense, of adequate accommodation, nutrition, reading material and medical treatment.
