A Special City Court today in its verdict convicted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, in the disproportionate assets case, under Prevention of Corruption Act.
This court's verdict means that Jayalalithaa stands disqualified as an MLA and therefore she will have to step down as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
Television reports say that along with her the court also found her ex-aide V K Sasikala guilty. Meanwhile, the quantum of sentence is expected to be pronounced by the Court this afternoon around 3 p.m.
The AIADMK chief is accused of obtaining assets worth almost Rs. 66 crore through dishonest means during her first tenure as Chief Minister between 1991 and 1996.
Jayalalithaa's former friend V K Sasikala, V N Sudhakaran and J Illavarasi are the co-accused in the case.
Earlier on Friday, Jayalalithaa's plea to postpone the pronouncement of its verdict in the disproportionate assets case had been rejected by the Supreme Court.
