The World Health Organization (WHO) has reportedly revealed that Ebola death toll is nearing the 4,000 mark with 3,879 people killed out of 8,033 cases in West Africa by the end of October 5.

While citing the figures on Wednesday, the WHO said that there was no evidence that the epidemic was being brought under control in the affected region, reported News 24.

With 2,210 deaths recorded so far and 200 suspected cases reported in Monrovia in each of the past three weeks, the situation in Liberia is deteriorating. Also, Ebola has reappeared in Grand Cape Mount District for the first time in three weeks, the WHO said.

In Sierra Leone, the capital city of Freetown and three neighboring districts have reported a surge in Ebola cases in the last seven or eight weeks. The country has recorded 879 deaths so far.

The WHO noted that assessing the real scale of the epidemic has been hindered by "widespread under-reporting of new cases and profound problems with data acquisition."

It has also warned the neighboring countries to prepare to face the epidemic as the disease spreads eastwards towards Ivory Coast.
