ED denies reports rejecting request for Red Corner Notice against Mallya

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Sunday denied reports rejecting request for a Red Corner Notice against liquor baron Vijay Mallya by the Interpol.

The Enforcement Directorate has said that it would issue the rebuttal shortly.

The Interpol is learnt to have sent back the Enforcement Directorate's request for a Red Corner Notice against Mallya with queries.

According to sources, the Interpol has raised objection on the request of the Enforcement Directorate, which approached it on May 12 seeking a global wanted notice, stating there is not enough evidence to issue a RCN against the businessman.

After seeking to withdraw the exemption granted to Mallya from personal appearance in the money laundering case, the Enforcement Directorate had earlier on May 12 approached the Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice against the absconding former UB group chairman, who is also wanted by the banks for defaulting around Rs. 9,000 crore.

A Delhi Court had earlier on May 20 adjourned the hearing on the Enforcement Directorate's plea, seeking to withdraw the exemption granted to Mallya from personal appearance in a case of allegedly evading summons in connection with purported violation of the Foreign Exchange Rules.

The Red Corner Notice is issued to seek the location and arrest of wanted persons with a view to extradition or similar lawful action in a criminal case probe. Once the said notice is issued, the Interpol seeks to arrest the person concerned in any part of the world and notifies that country to take his or her custody for further action at their end.
