'American Pastoral', directed by Ewan McGregor recently premiered at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival and won much critical acclaim.

In an interview with BBC, the 45-year-old actor highlighted the challenge of juggling directing with "trying to be a husband and a father and a human being" saying he needed a story he was "burning to tell" to justify his commitment to the making of the film, reports bbc.com.

"On the one hand it's been the most incredible experience and I would long to do it again," he admitted.

"And on the other hand, it's a very costly experience - 16, 17, 18 months of your life - carrying something very precious," the 'Lipstick on Your Collar' star added.

'American Pastoral' is a 1960s-set drama, based on Philip Roth's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by the same name, starring McGregor alongside Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning.

The movie shows the life of a very successful businessman, played by Ewan McGregor, whose seemingly perfect family life falls apart after his daughter Merry (Fanning) becomes politically radicalised.

The Scottish actor is also set for 'Trainspotting 2', directed by Danny Boyle and will come in theatres next year.
