Casting aside allegations that he was present at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's road show in Varanasi, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) vice-chancellor G.C. Tripathi on Tuesday said that he was being targetted because of the position he holds and added that some people are 'maligning' the image of the office.

"Those who made these allegations, I ask them to verify these facts. I think they wouldn't have committed this mistake, because by this they would have not targetted me, as an individual I do not matter at all. They targetted me because I am the vice-chancellor of BHU so they are trying to malign the image of the office," Tripathi told ANI.

He further said the allegations have inflicted damage upon the institutions' image and upon the people who have high regards for the university.

"I have sought legal opinion and once it is available, I will take legal action on this regard," he added.

Tripathi was in the midst of a controversy after some media houses reported that he was present at the March 4 road show.

The vice-chancellor has been at the receiving end of allegations ever since he was appointed in November 2014. He has been alleged to be a RSS propagator wanting to "saffronise" the university.
