Australian media has pointed out that Shane Watson's calf problems have been the all-rounder's weak link for some time now and an increasing workload after turning to his pressure-building fast-medium pace might have caused the recent injury in the fourth Ashes Test at Durham.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, only five days ago Watson had reassured that he felt more confident in his body and could let him self go more often now, since his body allowed him to do that.
Up until his withdrawal on Sunday he had sent down 80.3 overs in four Test matches in England, more than he has bowled in a single series since Australia's tour of India in 2008, the report said.
Watson's frustration at the MCG last December was such that he said after the match that he was considering giving bowling away and he did not bowl again until April in the Indian Premier League, where he plays for Rajasthan Royals, featuring as a batsman only on Australia's Test tour of India, the report added.
