Canada's acting High Commissioner to India, James Nickel, has congratulated India and its citizens ahead of the nation's 68th Independence Day, saying his country also shares and celebrates values of freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law, which both countries hold dear.

In a statement issued here, Nickel said: "I have always associated the month of August in India with Monsoons and the beginning of festivals after a long, dry summer. In the evenings, bright coloured kites flying against a dark, cloudy sky, is a sight to watch. It is also a reminder of the most important day of this month-the 15th of August. As everyone across India celebrates its 68th Independence Day this year, I feel it is the perfect time to celebrate the values of freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law that both India and Canada hold dear.

During my five-year tenure in India, I have seen remarkable advances in the relationship between our two countries. Official visits by our Prime Minister, Governor General and various Ministers have brought forth crucial agreements, including on social security, audio-visual co-production and nuclear cooperation.

In addition, our bilateral trade agenda steadily continues to grow. Key sectors where the potential is particularly high are energy and food security, education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and infrastructure. I am convinced that the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) currently under negotiation will further expand our long-term commercial relationship.

Nickel further said that during his assignment in India, "I have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of people from all walks of life. I have been impressed by their commitment to work for India's progress and development. Citizens' engagement and dedication in both India and Canada is the key to our future, and it would be remiss of me if I did not underscore the fundamental contribution that 13 lakh Canadians of Indian origin make to our bilateral relationship. Canada and India are long-standing friends and partners working together for the benefit of our citizens and the world in which we live.
