Indonesia plane crash: Search and rescue operation underway

Search and rescue operation is underway in waters of Karawang Bay to track down survivors of Lion Air flight which crashed in the sea on Monday morning.

Indonesian plane Lion Air flight JT 610 carrying 189 passengers and crew, went missing 13 minutes after the takeoff and later crashed in the sea, reported Straits Times.

The Indonesian authorities confirmed that Boeing 737 took off at 6:20 am (local time) and subsequently lost its contact with air traffic controllers at 6.33 am.

According to officials, the plane had requested to return to the base minutes before it disappeared from the radar.

A spokesperson for Indonesia's search and rescue agency, Yusuf Latif, said, "It has been confirmed that it has crashed."

The head of Indonesia's national transportation safety committee (KNKT) Soerjanto Tjahjono revealed that Boeing 737 had entered services in August and had clocked almost 800 flight hours.
