McLaren driver Fernando Alonso has been ruled out of this week's Bahrain Grand Prix after suffering from broken ribs and a partially collapsed lung.

The 34-year-old suffered a horrifying crash at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, which also featured new qualifying format that saw drivers getting eliminated one by one every minute-and-a-half rather than being dismissed at the end of each session.

Alonso announced that FIA doctors had studied CT scans and ordered him to stay out of this week's race, Sport24 reported.

Pointing out that his left side of the ribs was broken, the Mclaren driver, however, said that he was not facing any respiratory issue.

Alonso further revealed that he was ready to go through the pain in order to drive in the race, but added that safety comes first so he decided to drop the idea.

After suffering a life-threatening crash, Alonso also expressed the need of launching 'halo' safety device in the car, saying he would have liked the device protecting his head during his crash.

The Spanish driver is expected to recover in time for the Chinese Grand Prix to be held on April 17.
