Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) MLAs from Haryana staged a protest outside the Punjab Vidhan Sabha here on Thursday demanding the withdrawal of Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal Land Bill.
Around 19 INLD MLAs raised slogans against the bill, which provides for transfer of proprietary rights back to the land owners free of cost.
According to reports, the bill is an attempt to divest its neighbouring states from getting share from Punjab's river waters.
The bill, which was passed on Monday, is against the construction of contentious Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal. The Bill was passed hours before the SYL issue was being heard in the Supreme Court.
Hours after the bill was passed, farmers in some villages of Patiala and Ropar districts started taking possession of their land acquired for the construction of Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.
They were also seen filling the canal on their own, even though the governor is yet to sign the bill.
