Investing in girl child will take India to a higher level: Activist Saswati Ghosh

Woman rights activist Saswati Ghosh praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on the problem of female foeticide on Friday.

She said investing in the girl child will take India to a higher level.

"Women are 50 percent of this economy and are in various spheres. They are emerging as major players because of their discipline, and I believe that investing in girl child will take India to a higher level," said Saswati Ghosh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken of curbing female foeticide in his maiden Prime Ministerial speech during the celebration of India's 68th Independence Day.

Ghosh further said , "First of all, I really believe that it will have some effect at least. Narendra Modi, the type of mandate he has received, he can at least within his own party members, imbibe this value that daughters should be treated at par with boys, whether in terms of allowing them to be born by preventing foeticide or in terms of investing in their health, their nutrition, (and) their education etc".
