Chief Election Commissioner V. S. Sampath on Sunday said the decision on holding polls in Jammu and Kashmir will be taken in the next few days.

He said discussions with political parties, police and other government bodies in the state are on to assess the level of preparedness in case the Election Commission decides to go ahead with the polls in January.

"We have to do further deliberation and consultation among ourselves as necessary, we will be taking a decision shortly. The final decision will be taken by the commission in next few days," Sampath told ANI here.

"We made a visit yesterday, in which we had a day long consultations with all concerned people in Srinagar, half the day was spent in discussions with the political parties," he added.

He further said, "We have taken a note of the views expressed by the recognized political parties, we had discussions with our officers and with District Magistrates, SP's, Divisional Commissioners and IG's of police. This is mainly in the event of our deciding to have elections, what is the level of preparedness, whether there are any bottlenecks in infrastructure, ground situation etc."

The six-year term of the present National Conference Government ends on January 19, 2015, and the new government has to be in place before that to avoid imposition of governor's rule in state.
