Jat quota row: Protestors set Capt. Abhimanyu's house on fire

Adamant on their agitation till a legislation giving quota to the community under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category is cleared, the protest by the Jat community intensified as they torched the house of Haryana Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu on Friday.

The Finance Minister was not in his residence at the time.

Firing also broke out in which one person was injured and the protestors set up road blockade at many places in Panipat, which also affected movement of vehicles towards Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has also called for an all-party meeting to discuss the demands of Jat community leaders, who are agitating across the state seeking reservation in government jobs under Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

"We appeal everyone to maintain peace and harmony in Haryana and also open roads which have been blocked due to agitation," Khattar told the media here.

Meanwhile, the Haryana Government on Friday blocked the mobile internet services in Jhajjar and Rohtak.

Violence had broken out during the protest in Rohtak on Thursday, leaving at least 15 persons injured. The administration clamped prohibitory orders in the district by imposing Section 144 of CrPC to avert any further deterioration in law and order situation.

Police and paramilitary forces resorted to baton-charge and teargas shells to control the situation after some unidentified people torched motorcycles and pelted stones during clashes.

Prohibitory orders have been clamped in Rohtak, banning assembly of five or more persons.
