Liverpool back on top of PL table post 'controversial' win over West Ham

Liverpool has rolled back to the top of the Premier League table in a controversial win as their captain Steven Gerrard sealed a 2-1 victory against West Ham with his penalty.

Skipper Gerrard took his side back to the top of the table in a controversial fashion after manager Brendan Rodgers' side were given a second half spot-kick by referee Anthony Taylor, who had earlier allowed West Ham defender Guy Demel's equaliser against Liverpool despite a clear foul on the club goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

According to Sport24, West Ham striker Andy Carroll, who is also a former Liverpool striker, had caught Mignolet on the head while jumping for a corner, which caused the goalkeeper to fumble the ball to Demel, who pushed it into the unguarded net from close-range.

Despite the clear foul and a stunned Liverpool appealing for a free kick, Taylor left Liverpool reportedly infuriated as he granted the goal to West Ham, but Gerrard's penalty in the second half sealed his side's victory.

Rodger's said that although there had been some bad decisions both for and against them, Liverpool were clearly the better team.

Rodger's also said that Taylor had come out after the game to say that he had got it wrong for West Ham's goal.

Gerrard had reportedly provided his side with a lead in the first half with a penalty and his second penalty during the second half of the game took him past Kenny Dalglish on the all-time list of Liverpool goal-scorers.

Liverpool currently lead the Premier League table and are two points ahead of second placed Chelsea and four ahead of third placed Manchester City, who have two games in hand but face Rodger's squad at Anfield on Sunday, the report added.
