Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill helped New Zealand to give a strong reply to England's first inning total of 389 runs on the second day of the first Test at Lord's.

New Zealand finished off the day at 303-2 with Williamson and Ross Taylor still at the crease, trailing by 87 runs.

Starting the day at 354-7, England's inning didn't stay long enough as they got out adding 35 runs to the score.

Debutant Matt Henry and Trent Boult were the pick of the bowlers as they both picked four wickets each.

Trailing by 389 runs, New Zealand's openers provided an ideal response as Martin Guptill, on his return to Test cricket, and Tom Latham added 148 for the first wicket before the home side struck back by removing the pair within three deliveries to leave New Zealand 173 for 2 at tea.

Thereafter, the duo of Taylor and Williamson didn't give England any chance to smile and finished off the day with an unbeaten 155 run stand.

With Williamson and Taylor cruising on 92 and 47 respectively, New Zealand would look to clear off the deficit as early as possible and take a big lead on the third day.
