Lt. Gen. Subrata Saha assumed charge of the Chinar Corps from his predecessor Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh on Thursday.

Lt.Gen.Saha had earlier commanded a brigade in the Kashmir Valley and is a very experienced general officer.

Lt.Gen. Gurmit Singh has been posted to the army headquarters in New Delhi.

The appointment of a new corps commander comes at very challenging time when Amarnath yatra is about to begin and state assembly elections are to be held later in the year.

It also comes at a time when the army has to deal with the government's policy on ceasefire violations and infiltration etc.

The Chinar Corps is the nickname given to the XV Corps of the Indian Army.

It was first established in 1942, as part of the British Indian Army, during World War II with headquarters in Assam and district headquarters in the then Bengal Presidency.

It was disbanded in 1945 and reestablished after India gained independence, as part of the Indian Army.

It has taken part in all of India's wars against Pakistan.

Since 2004, it is headquartered in Srinagar. It currently consists of the 19th Infantry Division headquartered at Baramulla and the 28th Infantry Division headquartered at Gurez.
