Despite being officially classed as twins, three-year-olds Alessia and Lara Deleo from Australia do not share the same birthday.

Instead of being born minutes or even hours apart, the sisters entered the world 16 days apart - a feat obstetricians say is a rarity, News.com.au reported.

Alessia was born on February 2 before Lara arrived on February 18.

Parents Linda and Nick Deleo, both 38, never imagined when they went to the Women's and Children's Hospital in February, 2010, there would be more than two weeks between the births of their daughters.

The non-identical twins were delivered by Dr Anita Singla and born premature - at 23 weeks and almost 26 weeks respectively.
