Unidentified militants attacked a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) patrol party, killing one assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and injuring a constable, here on Wednesday.
According to senior CRPF officials, the militants opened fire on the patrol party. The injured personnel were ferried to a military hospital, but the ASI succumbed to his injuries.
The police have also launched search operations in the nearby areas to nab the assailants.
"They (unidentified militants) fired on the boys and they ran towards the road leading to Phulwama (district in India's Kashmir). There was army deployment across the road also. They fired on the militants but somehow they managed to escape out of this area. One ASI who was critically injured has expired, he has passed away in the Army hospital and another constable who got bullet injury, he is being taken care of and he is okay," said CRPF Inspector General P. K. Singh.
No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The Kashmir region has witnessed numerous militant attacks, insurgency and infiltration attempts from across the border in the last two decades.
